Niacin Flush: What It Is and Why It Happens

Take a niacin-containing product and, for some people, a warm red flush spreads across the face and chest within half an hour. It looks alarming the first time. It's also one of the best-documented, most harmless reactions in the entire supplement category.

What's happening under the skin

What it actually feels like

Redness and warmth across the face, neck and upper chest, sometimes with a mild prickling or itching sensation. It typically starts within 15 to 30 minutes of taking niacin and fades within an hour on its own. Uncomfortable, occasionally alarming if you weren't expecting it, but not dangerous for the vast majority of healthy adults.

The dose makes a big difference

Flush reactions become noticeably more common at niacin doses well above the standard recommended daily allowance of roughly 14 to 16 milligrams — think hundreds of milligrams, the range used in medically supervised niacin therapy for cholesterol management. Wellness formulas typically use amounts closer to everyday nutritional levels, which is part of why flush isn't a commonly reported effect from a product like this one.

What's worth doing if it happens to you

Taking niacin with food can sometimes soften the reaction. If a flush feels unusually severe, comes with difficulty breathing, or simply doesn't fade after an hour or two, stop taking the product and check in with a doctor — not because the flush itself is typically dangerous, but because it's worth ruling out something else going on.
